Bob Gale said that he got the idea for this film when he was looking at his father's yearbook and he wondered if he went back in time if he and his father would have been friends.
Michael J. Fox originally had to turn down the role of Marty McFly due to scheduling conflicts with filming Family Ties. So Eric Stoltz was cast in the role, a few scenes were shot however Stoltz left the project after several arguments with the cast and crew about the tone of the film. the studio then went more aggressively after Fox and the producers of Family Ties agreed to let him shoot the film as long as it didn't interfere with the shooting schedule of the show which taped five days a week. Fox would have to drive directly from the Family Ties set to this set, and as a result the majority of this movie was filmed after 6pm, with daylight scenes shot on the weekends, and with Fox averaging about 2 hours of sleep a night.
In the original draft of the script the time machine was a laser that would shoot of a machine inside a house. In the second draft the time machine became a refrigerator that was able to travel through time with the aide of an atomic bomb. This idea was scrapped because Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis didn't want to encourage young children to climb inside their refrigerator. Finally it was decided to use the Delorean in the third draft of the script but it still involved driving the car into a nuclear explosion. In the final draft of the script the concept of getting the car up to 88 miles per hour and using plutonium was finalized.
The person who stands up and tell Marty his music is "just too darn loud" is Huey Lewis, the lead singer of Huey Lewis And The News whose songs provide the soundtrack to the film.
Mark Campbell does all the actual singing that Marty does, his voice was dubbed over Michael J. Fox's and in the film he is credited as Marty McFly as well.
