    One of the 20th century's most compelling figures, Howard Hughes was a wily industrialist, glamorous movie producer and unstoppable American innovator - but he thought of himself first and foremost as an aviator. In this spectacular epic, director Martin Scorsese focuses on the most prolific period in the life of Hughes (played by Best Actor Golden Globe Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio): the mid-1920's through the 1940's. It was a time of brilliant aeronautical invention, turbulent love affairs (including one with Katharine Hepburn played by Cate Blanchett) and savage corporate battles. TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• Jim Carrey was originally considered for the role of Howard Hughes but it never came to be for unknown reasons.
• Michael Mann was the first director of this film, but he dropped out not wanting to direct three biography movies in a row after filming The Insider and Ali, but he did take a producer credit.
• Some scenes with Jane Lynch playing Amelia Earhart were cut from the final cut of the movie.
• Despite Scorese's long list of critically acclaimed movies, this was his first film to gross more than 100 million dollars in domestic sales.
• A lot of effort was put into Cate Blanchett's performance as Katharine Hepburn, she studied with a dialect coach, watched Hepburn's first 14 movies at Martin Scorsese's request, learned how to play golf and tennis, took cold showers like the real Hepburn used to, and had freckles painstakingly painted on her face and body.
• Gweynth Paltrow was scheduled to play Ava Gardner but she dropped out at the last minute, Kate Beckinsale dived into the role gaining 20 pounds to make herself look more realistic.
• Gwen Stefani makes her movie debut as Jean Harlow in this movie.
