This film is based on the book of the same name by Ron Hansen. When Brad Pitt signed on to the project he had it written into his contract that the unusually long name of the film could not be changed.
After numerous casting sessions the role of Robert Ford came down to a tie between Casey Affleck and Shia LaBeouf. However in the end it was decided that LaBeouf was far too young looking for the part and the role went to Affleck.
Originally the role of Charley Ford, the brother of Robert Ford, was given to Garret Dillahunt due to the fact that Casey Affleck who plays Robert looks a lot like Dillahunt. However Dillahunt had to turn down the role due to prior commitments and was forced to take a much smaller role in the film. The Role of Charley eventually went to Sam Rockwell.
