• An early draft of this film was set to star and be directed by Kevin Kline and was titled Old Friends.
• The roles of Melvin and Carol were initially offered to John Travolta and Holly Hunter.
• The role of Carol's mother Beverly was originally given to Betty White, but being a huge animal rights activist, she dropped off of the project when she learned how Verdell the dog was treated in the film.
• John Cusack was originally offered the role of Simon, but he had to turn the role down to the shoot for Gross Pointe Blank running long. As a result the role was given to Greg Kinnear.
• The title of this movie in Hong Kong translates directly to Mr. Cat Poop. This happened due to Melvin's last name in the picture having a similar pronunciation to cat poop in Cantonese.
