-
This film was shot entirely on location in the rain forests
of Mexico. As a result numerous weather problems hindered the production.
Heavy rains caused flooding in the region where filming was taking places
causing the film's release to be pushed back from an August release to
a December release. The flooding also left almost a million people homeless,
the cast and crew aided in food relief in the area.
-
The hot and humid weather of the rain forest also were wreaking
havoc on the digital cameras being used to film the movie. Special heat
reflective blankets had to be placed over all of the cameras, and special
thermometers were installed on the cameras themselves to constantly monitor
the heat levels.
-
Many of the extras in this film are local Mayans who have
no acting experience.

In the waterfall jumping sequence Rudy Youngblood performed
his own stunt work. However instead of having him jump off the actual waterfall
Mel Gibson put a harness on him and had him jump off a 15 story building
and then digitally added the jumping footage onto footage of the waterfall.
Gibson reportedly gave Youngblood a hard time about his reluctance to perform
the stunt job, so he and the crew ganged up on Gibson and made him perform
the jump as well.
