WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
There's no place like home...
for bloodcurdling horror! James Brolin, Margot Kidder and Academy Award
winner Rod Steiger fall prey to the powers of darkness in this spine-tingling
tale of a house possessed by unspeakable evil. One of the most talked about
haunted-house stories of all time, The Amityville Horror will hit
you where you live.
For George and Kathy Lutz, the colonial
home on the river's edge seemed ideal: quaint, spacious and amazingly affordable.
Of course, six brutal murders had taken place there just a year before,
but houses don't have memories... or do they? Soon the Ltz dream house
becomes a hellish nightmare, as walls begin to drip blood and satanic forces
threaten to to destroy them. Now the Lutzes must try to escape or forfeit
their lives - and their souls!

-
This movie is based on the book of the same name written
by Jay Anson, which is itself supposed to be based on true events. After
the success of his book, Anson wrote a screenplay out for the producers,
who felt it was poorly written and turned it down.
-
James Brolin had several friendly meetings with the real
George Lutz, however stated publicly that he didn't believe his stories
about the house being haunted. Margot Kidder also went on the record stating
that she didn't believe in the story either.
-
In 1979 attorney William Weber filed a law suit against the
real Lutz's claiming he had a contract with them for rights to retelling
the story in both book and film forms, and claimed that the story of the
house being haunted was made up one evening over several bottles of wine.
-
The studio tried to garner more interest in the film by making
up stories of "strange occurrences" on the set and releasing them to the
press.
