This movie is based on an 2000 New York Magazine article
called The Return Of Superfly by Marc Jacobson.
-
For years this movie was in some sort of development. At
one point Terry George was set to direct with Don Cheadle and Joaquin Pheonix
in the lead roles, however that project was scrapped. In 2004 the film
began pre-production with director Antoine Fuqua and with Denzel Washington
and Benico Del Toro in the leads, however Universal halted production at
the time because they were concerned the budget was far too high to make
a profit. As a result the studio was forced to pay Washington 20 million
dollars and Del Toro 5 million dollars as they both had a clause in their
contract stating they would get their full salaries regardless if the movie
was made or not. Washington received a second paycheck for this film when
it was green-lit again and he was once again hired for the lead role.
-
Director Ridley Scott filmed on location in the Chiang Mai
Province of Thailand, and many of the extras that Scott hired for the shoot
actually worked for Frank Lucas' drug operation.
-
Shortly after this film's release a number of members of
the New York police department filed a lawsuit against the producers of
this film claiming that some of the facts in this movie regarding the number
of "dirty cops" that were convicted as a result of Frank Lucas and Richie
Roberts collaboration was drastically incorrect. They said since this movie
claimed to be based off of a true story that they were defaming the good
name of the police department. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed.
