TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• The role of Russell Hammond was originally given to Brad Pitt, who worked for months with Camron Crowe on the part before Pitt quit the part saying "I just don't get it enough to do it." Crowe then gave the role to Billy Crudup.
• Cameron Crowe had difficulty naming his film, the film went through several name changes including: Something Real, Stillwater, and The Uncool. Crowe decided he wanted to release the film under the title Untitled, but the studio refused to let him do it, as a result he settled on the name Almost Famous. When Crowe released his Director's Cut of the film on DVD, he called the film Untitled.
• Billy Crudup did not know how to play the role when he was cats in this film, but he was taught by Peter Frampton.
• Sarah Polley was original cast as Penny Lane, but dropped the role and opted to be in the low budget film The Law Of Enclosures. Crowe opened the role back up for casting and the role came down to Kate Hudson and Kirsten Dunst. Crowe said he gave the role to Hudson because he felt she had more of a free spirit, but promised Dunst he would give her a role in one of his movies later on. A promise he kept by casting her in the film Elizabethtown.
• The fictional band Stillwater that was created for this movie had original songs that were written by Cameron Crowe and his wife Nancy Wilson who was in the band Heart. Although the guitars were provided by Mike McCready of Pearl Jam.
• The story of this film is a semi-autobiographical account of Cameron Crowe starting out as a young Rolling Stone reporter. Many of the stories are from a number of different bands and just rolled into a linear story, but at the age of 18, Crowe followed the Allman Brothers on tour, which was where the main inspiration for the film came from.
• Jack Black and Jon Favreau both auditioned for the role of Lester Bangs before Philip Seymout Hoffman landed the role. As it turned out Hoffman was overbooked and was only able to be on set for 4 days of filming, all of which he was sick with the flu.
• Jason Lee said he studied the stage moves of Paul Rodgers of Bad Company to get the rock star look down.
