TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

-
This movie was floating around Hollywood for more than a
decade. Throughout the nineties many directors signed on to the project
including Spike Lee, Norman Jewison, and Oliver Stone. Oliver stone came
close to making the film and he was in talks with Denzel Washington to
play the role of Ali, but the project fell through when Washington signed
on to the film The Hurricane, causing Oliver Stone to abandon the
project and make Any Given Sunday.
-
Will Smith had to gain 35 pounds to match Ali's fighting
weight of 220 pounds.
-
The original screenplay was commissioned to be written by
Remember
The Titans screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard, his script was never
used and producers then asked Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson
to write a new script which at more than 200 pages spawned Ali's life from
a child to the present. When Michael Mann signed on as director he hired
on Eric Roth who wrote The Insider with him, to help him rework
the script.
-
Both Michael Mann and Will Smith were so passionate about
making the film they informed producers that if they went over budget they
could take the extra money form their salaries.
