DESCRIPTION:
Voted "one of the 10 funniest
movies ever made" by the American Film Institute, Airplane is a
masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy. Featuring Robert Hays as an ex-fighter
pilot forced to take over the controls of an airliner when the flight crew
succumbs to food poisoning; Julie Hagerty as his girlfriend/stewardess/co-pilot;
and a cast of all-stars including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves,
Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar... and more! Their hilarious high jinks
spoof airplane disaster flicks, religious zealots, television commercials,
romantic love... the lists whirls by in rapid succession. And the story
races from one moment of zany fun to the next!

Although many movies are spoofed in this film, the movie
is primarily based on the 1957 film Zero Hour. So many references
and direct quotes from that movie were used that the producers of the movie
actually had to buy the rights of the film so they could use as many references
as were needed.
-
Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Leslie Nielsen
all made their comedic debuts in this film. All of these actors were chosen
for this movie due to their long careers of playing serious minded characters,
however many of them would go on to make many more comedies after Airplane.
-
The filmmakers wanted the plane used in the film to be a
propeller plane, however the studio insisted that they use a jet engine
model instead. To get back at the studio they inserted the sound effects
of a propeller plane every time it was shown flying on screen.
-
The Jive talk spoken in the movie was completely ad-libbed
on set. All three writers have all admitted that they themselves are not
fluent in Jive.
-
The role of the co-pilot was originally offered to Pete Rose,
he had to decline the part as this was filmed during baseball season. The
role was then offered to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with a salary of $30,000.
Abdul-Jabbar agreed to do the role but insisted that he be paid $35,000
instead so that he could afford to buy an oriental rug he had been wanting.
-
In Germany the film's title was changed to: The Incredible
Trip in a Crazy Airplane. While in Argentina the film was called: And
Where Is The Pilot?
