It is not however known why Frank Lloyd was announced the winner only for his work on The Devine Lady and not for his work on Drag and Weary River, as according to the rules of the time you would win for your work throughout that year, the internal files do show that the other two films were under review however.

**NOTE** - Charles Chaplin won a special award this year for The Circus. A letter to Chaplin explains the award: "The Academy Board of Judges on merit awards for individual achievements in motion picture arts during the year ending August 1, 1928, unanimously decided that your name should be removed from the competitive classes, and that a special first award be conferred upon you for writing, acting, directing and producing 'The Circus.' The collective accomplishments thus displayed place you in a class by yourself." Also only in this category awards and nominations were given out in sub-categories of "comedy" and "dramatic" with separate winners in each. As a result three awards were given for Best Directing if you include Charles Chaplin's award.
