**The writing categories the Academy gave out have gone through numerous changes throughout the years, so many in fact that they could not all be listed on the award pages themselves. As a result I have created a time line showing the changes in categories. It should be noted that while at different times credit for story was separate from the screenplay awards, and other times it was a combined award, but on this site we will only be recognizing the screenwriters for simplicity purposes.**

**NOTE** - Friendly Persuasion was not an official nomination. Michael Wilson's contract had a clause that if he had not cleared his name from the blacklist before release of any of his films the studio and the right to remove his name from the credits of the film. Since at the several of the contracts were floating around Hollywood, The Academy decided to create a bi-law stating that if a film was nominated and there was no one who could be credited for the work then the entire nomination would be removed for consideration. That year Friendly Persuasion was nominated in this category and since no one was officially given credit for the screenplay it omitted for final consideration leaving only 4 nominees for the category. The bi-law was short lived and was withdrawn in 1959, and on 12/10/02 The Board Of Governors of The Academy Awards voted to restore Michael Wilson and Friendly Persuasions to the record books and include them with the other nominees.
