**NOTE** - Norma Shearer should have won two Academy Awards as the rules stated at the time that if nominated for more than one film and you won for one than you would win for both. However, it was only announced that Shearer won for The Divorcee even though the nomination for both were announced. No one is really sure as to why this was, some speculate that the voters may have indicated that they perferred Shearer's peformance in The Divorcee, while others say there was a mistake on the voting ballots and only The Divorcee was listed. Greta Garbo was nominated for both Anna Christie and Romance under these same rules.

1928/1929
**NOTE** - According to the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Science, no nominees were officially announced this year, only the winners were unveiled, however according to their internal files all of the films listed above were under consideration.

1927-1928
**NOTE** - Janet Gaynor won the award for her roles in 7th Heaven, Street Angel, and Sunrise as allowed by the rules at the time stating that you would win for the work you did that year.
