**NOTE** - The nomination for Franchot Tone was not considered an official nomination as he was a write-in vote. In this year they announced the winner along with 2nd and 3rd place recipients. In this year the title of the award was changed from Best Actor to Best Actor In A Leading Role, to coincide with the introduction of the Best Supporting Actor category which was added in this year as well.

1934
**NOTE** - In this year they announced the winner along with 2nd and 3rd place recipients.

1932/1933
**NOTE** - In this year they announced the winner along with 2nd and 3rd place recipients.

1931/1932
**NOTE** - In this year there were two winners announced for this category. Fredric March beat Wallace Beery by one vote, but the rules at the time stated that if any category came with-in three votes of each other than it would be considered a tie, hence two winners this year. In this year they announced the winner along with 2nd and 3rd place recipients.

1930/1931

1929/1930

**NOTE** - George Arliss should have won two Academy Awards as the rules stated at the time that if nominated for more than one film and you won for one than you would win for both. However, it was only announced that Arliss won for Disraeli even though the nomination for both were announced. No one is really sure as to why this was, some speculate that the voters may have indicated that they perferred Arliss' peformance in Disraeli, while others say there was a mistake on the voting ballots and only Disraeli was listed.

1928/1929
**NOTE** - According to the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Science, no nominees were officially announced this year, only the winners were unveiled, however according to their internal files all of the films listed above were under consideration.

1927-1928
**NOTE** - Charles Chaplin won a special award this year for The Circus. A letter to Chaplin explains the award: "The Academy Board of Judges on merit awards for individual achievements in motion picture arts during the year ending August 1, 1928, unanimously decided that your name should be removed from the competitive classes, and that a special first award be conferred upon you for writing, acting, directing and producing 'The Circus.' The collective accomplishments thus displayed place you in a class by yourself." Emil Jannings won the actual Best Actor award for his work in two movies that year, while Richard Barthelmess was nominated for two movies as well, which was allowed according to the rules of the time.
