This movie is based off the short story of the same name
by Elmore Leonard which was previously adapted to the screen in 1957 which
starred Glenn Ford and Van Heflin in the lead roles.
-
Originally this film was set to star Tom Cruise and Eric
Bana in the lead roles, however before production could begin Cruise dropped
off of the project, and the entire production was shut down. This allowed
director James Mangold to ask his first choice for the starring role, Russell
Crowe to come on as the new lead. Once he agreed the project was once again
green lighted and Crowe and Mangold both agreed that Christian Bale was
there first choice to play the second lead.
-
This film was shot primarily in New Mexico where it is generally
dry and dusty. However during the final week of shooting the crew arrived
on set to see that a snow storm and swept through the area and dropped
2 feet of snow on the ground. All of the snow had to be removed from all
of the buildings and bulldozers piled the snow up in to giant 8 foot piles
out of the sight lines of the cameras. Then dump trucks delivered dry topsoil
which was spread across the now soaked dirt that was covering the ground.
