This film is based on the popular notion that the ancient Mayan civilization has predicted the world will come to an end on December 21st, 2012. At this time all of the planets in the Milky Way will line up in perfect unison on the winter solstice, an event that happens only once every 25,800 years.
Director Roland Emmerich who has become famous from making disaster movies such as Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow has said that this will be the last movie in that genre.
Roland Emmerich is a huge fan of rapper 50 cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson. As a tribute to him he named the main character in this film Jackson Curtis.
