A
lone time traveler from the year 2035 must solve a riddle that may save
his people... but it may also take him to the brink of madness. Bruce Willis,
Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt star in this brilliant sci-fi masterpiece
from Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director of The Fisher King.
After the world's population is devastated
by a killer virus, survivors must live in the dank underground communities.
Cole (Willis) "volunteers" to travel into the past to obtain a pure virus
sample, thereby helping scientists develop a cure. Along the way, he crosses
paths with a beautiful psychiatrist (Stowe) and a one-card-short-of-a-full-deck
mental patient (Pitt). But the race is on, as Cole searches for The Army
of the 12 Monkeys, a radical group linked to the deadly disease.
With unforgettable performances and
imaginative special effects, 12 Monkeys is a modern-day classic
laced with Gilliam's trademark wit and dazzling visual style.

THE
GEEK BOX TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS
Terry Gilliam spoke with Bruce Willis after he made Die
Hard and found out that the scene where he is talking about his wife
while pulling glass out of his feet was ad-libbed. Gilliam was so impressed
by this that he remembered it for years and when he agreed to do 12
Monkeys he insisted Willis play the role. Willis even took a massive
pay cut just to work with Gilliam. However, that did not stop Gilliam from
giving Willis a list "Willis Acting Clichés" that were not to be
allowed in the movie. It is said that the "steely blue eyes look" made
the list.
This movie was inspired by the 1962 French film La Jetee.
La
Jetee was a still shot film based upon a world destroyed by nuclear
war and the survivors decide to try time travel as a solution to their
problem.
Terry Gilliam was convinced he would have to send Brad Pitt
to a speech coach to get him to master being able to pull off nervous rapid
speech. It turned out it wasn't necessary, all Gilliam had to do was take
away his cigarettes and the withdrawal symptoms took over.
Universal managed to get Brad Pitt to do this movie for a
small salary, since at the time he was still a relatively small name, but
by the time the movie was actually released Interview With A Vampire,
Se7en,
and Legends Of The Fall had all been released and he was now an
A-List actor.
Charles Roven, the producer of this movie, and Terry Gilliam
were fighting about how the movie should end. Gilliam wanted to stray from
the script and end with Cole looking at himself as a boy while Roven wanted
to follow the script and end the movie in the parking lot outside the airport.
Gilliam decided to use cranes stacked on top of one another and make the
shot as expensive a possible thinking Roven would not approve the budget,
but it ended up being approved and Gilliam ended up loving the shot he
got.
